Join The Centenary Company
We are a friendly society and always welcome new faces, both as performers and in offstage roles (such as helping with publicity, sourcing props and painting scenery).
Why join us?
We are a lively, friendly group from a diverse range of backgrounds. If you’re interested in swelling our ranks on stage, the main requirements are that you enjoy performing, can sing in tune, and know your left foot from your right.
Some of our members have made their stage debuts with us, but we also welcome more experienced performers! Principal roles in our main productions are awarded on merit following auditions, with no requirement for principals to have performed with us before.
On top of our performance activities, we organise social events such as barbecues and quiz nights. And our cast-and-crew parties are great!
When do we rehearse?
Between May and November, we rehearse on Thursdays (7.30–10pm) in St Barnabas Church Hall, 449 Rochester Way, Well Hall, SE9 6PH. There are no rehearsals in August.
From September to November the pace picks up, with additional rehearsals on Tuesday evenings (venue for 2018 to be confirmed). These are initially for soloists only, but from around mid-October the chorus are also required on most Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Finally, in the run-up to the performances we hold afternoon rehearsals for everyone on most Sundays in November.
How much does it cost?
Unfortunately, putting on a show doesn’t come cheap: there’s the cost of the theatre and the rehearsal space, plus costumes to hire, sets to build, the orchestra to pay, and much more! We keep our fees as low as we can.
The annual membership fee is £30. All onstage performers in our shows must be members of the Company.
There is also a show fee of £120 (students £45) for our main production each year.
That’s £150 in total to be in a fully staged show – working out at less than £7 per week over the production’s rehearsal period.
We usually charge small show fees for our scratch performances and concerts.
If you want to try for a principal role in one of our main productions, the audition fee is £10 – but this counts towards your show fee.
Members are expected to pay for their own music – often available secondhand cheaply! – and to provide some minor elements of their costume and (occasionally) props. We cover everything else.
You don’t have to be a member or pay a show fee if you’d like to be involved offstage – just drop us a line and we’ll be very glad to hear from you!
What else do we expect from you?
Our main expectation of performers is that you turn up to rehearsals! If you know that you won’t be available on a particular date, please mark this on the register (located near the door at rehearsals) well in advance.
Many cast members help out with backstage roles such as painting scenery – or volunteer their friends and family…
We also encourage members to participate in all our events (not just the main productions), help publicise our activities, keep an eye out for sponsorship opportunities, and sell tickets!
